clare smith death through restraint is appalling and is not acceptable anything that prevents this must be supported.
Frances Brown This is an initiative which is long overdue. I think all staff working with vulnerable children and adults should sign up. Good luck.
Roger Blunden I hope this charter helps stamp out disrespectful and inhumane practices
Darinka Novak I have worked with people who have a learning disability since 1977. I am appalled that in the 21st century prone restraint is still considered as a way of supporting people who present challenging behaviours. We need to keep up the campaign to eliminate this practice.
Lynn Plimley Support for this charter is much needed and overdue in generating this kind of groundswell. Nobody, for any reason, in health, care, education, public, private or voluntary provisions should be treated in this way.
Jody Hoffman I believe that if staff are taught restrictive physical intervention techniques, they will ultimately employ them to control behavior rather than to promote safety. I know of cases where individuals have died for want of a phone call home or a drink of water after bedtime due to the application of "approved" intervention techniques.
Joanna Frith This is a very good initiative. I hope it will have the desired effect on restraints used in the future. I have seen how well alternatives work. Jo
Paul Couchman Any kind of physical restraint is abuse - unless it is part of an agreed contract of care between the recipient and the caregiver. Paul Couchman
Linda Woodcock As a parent of a young man with Autism and very challenging behaviour my worst nightmare is that he will end up in a placement where the staff are so badly trained in autism that they resort to this type of restraint. It is an abuse of human rights and needs to be stopped NOW!
Graeme Brady Brilliant initiative
Geoffrey McDonald The sooner the government in Britain stops dithering and actually bans these practices the better. They have gone part way in giving BILD the lead but they need to make it compulsory that only BILD accredited organisations are allowed and acceptable. BILD thwen need to police these organisations to ensure that they teach what they have signed up to.
Andy Fitton I have worked for 24 years in services supporting people with severe learning disabilities and challenging behaviour. During this time I have never used or supported the use of prone restraint. The use of such type of restraint is uneccessary as there are other methods of handling crisis should the situation arise. I support the use of PROACT SCIPr UK and have seen significant improvements in the lives of many service users through positive behavioural support.
