I feel that any progress in the right direction is positive.
It is really hard to believe in this day and age that practices like this still exist in this part of the world. Do we consider ourselves civilised and developed ??.. |

Have finished the SCIPr course with Pat as facilitator. Have done various other 'violence and aggression' training over the years. Found this training a refreshing change. Well run course with the empasis on patient care and dignity. I support what the charter is trying to achive. |

Had a "training day" (well, more of an insight) today with Andy (23rd March 2006), it was great. I have learn't so much, and will take the things that i have learn't today into my new job, and my personal life with a child who has some "problems".
I think some of the barbaric things of the "past" need to be abolished totally from all kinds of our society, this means not just "care" homes, but into schools and work places.
If only "we all" can take on board, that being a "bully!" (in which "ever- form"), is not acceptable to any human.
Thanks for the time for reading this..... |

I support the millfields charter. |

I have worked with people with a learning disability for some fourteen years. In that time, I have observved examples of inspired intuition and empathy, resulting in fantastic and positive outcomes. Unfortunately, I have observed far incidents of the abuse and the abuse of "power" within so caled care settings.
We have at our disposal, evidenced based proactive and reactive strategies that are effective, safe and humane that both protect the individual and affect long term change.
While both statutory and private sector organisations continue to sanction the use of barbaric and inhuman methods such as prone restraint, we as a society are condoning such abuse. |

As a progessional person who has been working with people with learning disability, many o fwhom also exhibit severly challenging behaviour, including severe self injury and aggression, I beleive there are acceptable alternatives to the types of restraint outlined as unacceptable in the millfields charter. |

Any action that leads to the humiliation of an individual is abuse. |
